33. Curried Split Pea Soup

33 - Curried Split PeaSplit pea soup never looks good, but this Indian take on the dish is delish

Prep to plate time: 1 hr 15 min
Servings: 4


  • 1 medium Onion
  • 12 oz dried Green Split Peas
  • 5 cups Chicken Broth
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Curry Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • Pepper
  • Sour Cream (optional)
  • Parmesan Cheese (optional)


  1. PREP: chop the onion. Mince the garlic
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat then add the onion, garlic and 2 tsp pepper and cook for 5 min. Try not to let the onions brown
  3. Add the peas, chicken broth and curry powder. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil
  4. Cover and let simmer until peas are tender and are not holding their shape. About 45 min
  5. Adjust taste with additional seasonings as desired
  6. Using an immersion or regular blender, puree soup until the desired consistency
  7. PLATE: if desired, top with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese and a dollop of sour cream
